well I replaced the MAF, power relays (both) just like the shop manual said to. (said to do all three at once) the car still pops up with a 34
I am having trouble with the starter (bogs down then starts the car. I know it needs replacing)
The question is, will the extra juice going to my bad starter deprive these sensors of enough of their own juice that the computer would squirt out a code 34?
the light only comes on when the starter bogs down before kicking on the engine. If the starter starts immediately, no light.
nope your statement is not stupid. I had the battery unplugged while i changed the relays. a good half hour since i had to run to the parts store. I read in the manual that that was supposed to clear it. maybe not eh?
Do you have a factory manual? My 88 FM says "A low, rough, or unstable idle could result in a Code 34. Also, be sure air ducts are tight and not cracked....Code 34 could also result from a dirty or misadjusted throttle body." That's to say your code could be the result of something other than the maf although it is a maf code. I recommend a factory manual if you don't have one.
Good luck.

yes i have a chevy shop manual. not an aftermarket one but the actual shop manual from chevy. and you are right this one doesn't have a map. only 84, 91-94 according to the other manual (haynes)
alternator was put in 3 months ago. it is charging the battery fine. don't know if this helps you.
I have just looked up how to replace the starter. is this bugger difficult to wiggle out? going through service manual and do not see anything else that may place a code 33 or 34 besides the Maf and its relays
Is your timing OK? I ask because of the starting problem. How does the car run? To see the actual symptoms of a bad maf do a search for "L98 still running rough" and take a look at that nightmare.

the manual states "disconnect battery pigtail located near the battery, for 30 seconds"
I disconnecte the negative for a half hour when I ran to the store. would this be the same thing as their pigtail?
well this weekend i guess i replace the starter. I know that needs to be replaced. see what happens.
Have my dad come over with his auto x ray and give it a gander.
(my brother and i bought it for him for christmas. he is setting up a computer in his garage and ordered the link for it) He is a mechanic by and is trained on all of the latest computers for the cars, so we knew he could help us with ours (course i think he figured out why we bought it for him ;)
If when you say you have a starter problem you mean you also hav a problem starting the car because the idle is very low that could be your problem. As stated before clean the throttle plates this code is uasualy caused by below idle idle speed but if you have never had this you might just have a bad ECM. Yes a MAF sensor could be a problem but if it only happens when you start the car if you do not have a problem with below idle idle speed I would suspect ECM.
