There's not much out there. Edlebrock made shorty headers with a carb #. I was gonna buy a set from Summit Racing. Last time I checked the Edlebocks were not available. I heard the Pacesetters are crap.
Everybody here said I would be throwing my money away on shortys because I already had stock shortys.
We can't legally run long tubes here. We're kinda screwed when it comes to exhaust.

Yes Ron, stock primaries are 1.5".
I spent a lot of time trying to find a shorty option (so I wouldn't have to redo everything behind my manifold, which has already been redone). Anesthes listed one Hooker option but later discredited it's use.
If you have the time, www.HotRodLane.cc said they would work with a customer to get their SBC 350 shorty option to fit. But, I don't remember if it's available with tubes. Give them a call and ask for the header shop.
Another option, is letting HRLane cut, port, and Ehone the existing manifolds. It is a service they also offer. Getting the AIR tubes out of the actual manifold tube ought to help flow quite a bit. Call me if you need more info.

Hmm. trying to squeeze what we can out of this thing, would hate to have to use the stock ones. As it is we are stuck with the 2-1-2 exhaust but with upgraded size it should be Ok as the build will be very mild.
Gotsta be one out there somewhere...
Do you know of Dyno Don? I believe he has a SMOG legal system going out of So Cal. I'd talk to them, seems all the big, in CA, motors on thirdgen are running his stuff. Merely observation on my end.
Hooker had them for the LT1 cars, SLP used to make them and they may still be a few sets laying around in their warehouse. Not sure who makes them for a L98 car, but I would think that you can easily use a set of the LT1 shortys seeing how their CATs are located in the rear section.
TJ, think the exhaust ports would pair up Ok, Im guessing they should? Guessing the EGR fitting may have to be moved and welded on (not sure where they are on LTx cars)
I would probably just buy some generic block huggers of whatever is out there (lt1/4) and weld on some bungs for smog. maybe put some shields on them and call it stock enough.

stock lt1 cast manifolds that car ceramic coated. note the single egr tube on the center runners. L98's are very different, plus the LTX are cast, as the l98 is tubular steel, and I believe they are stainless steel?
stock coated l98 manifolds
here is the 89-91 set up
these have been ported.

I did a lot of research and made numerous phone calls trying to find a legal set of headers for my 87 that had a CARB # on it.
Was told by everyone that no such header exists for my application that would be legal for use in the state of California.
I called everyone from Hedman to Hooker and even some names that I wasn't familiar with only to get the same answer.
A friend with a 89 tried as well some years ago and gave up and ended up buying a C6.
Know of any without a # that may work?
Standards getting lower here.
Looks like the L98 stuff would work just as well as the Hookers would. Plus it has all the correct piping you need to pass your smog inspection. And they appear as good as the Hooker shorty headers.

Ron,
If you consider the 2061 Hooker shorties (pictured above), contact Anesthes (Joe) first. He tried to put a set on his L98 but had issues.
I don't know if they were cureable, but I believe he said he had trouble with seal. This was actually my first thought except for Joe's feedback -- plus you wanted 1 5/8".
Still, for a 383, I'd be tempted to try these, install (weld-in) a EGR tube on #8, use Percy's gaskets, finish with and stage 8 locking bolts. If you want more torque, just install 2.25" duals (vs 2.5") behind them. 2" pipe might even be the answer.
Thanks for the feedback. I had heard 90-91 are larger diameter tubes or maybe I misunderstood?
Guess worst case is I have the guy keep his stock ones on, get another set and take them somewhere along with those hookers possibly and make them work. Collector Im not worried about, it is what it is if theres a small power loss over longtubes then so be it. Seems like a shame to cork up a 383 with such a tiny tube. (1-1/2)
Ron, the c4 "headers" listed are coated stockers (except for the LTs and maybe the shorties for the LT1). Description doesn't say if they have any port work at all.
