Default Transmission Problem - Need Suggestions

I have a 1995 C4 with an automatic transmission.

It has 72K miles on it and has never given me a moments problem.

I drove it this morning and went to pass a car, only to have the transmission feel like it went into neutral, and not into overdrive.

The more I drove the car, it felt like the car would not shift out of 2nd.

The transmission coolant rose to about 250 degrees, so I took the car home.

Car idles fine, starts find, and takes off fine, but will not shift up into high gear(s). I 'm a driver and not a mechanic, so excuse my ignorance, but I need some suggestions as to what this might be.

By the way, the fluid levels are fine, and the fluids look fine.

Could this be a solenoid in the transmission that causes the shift into
3rd ?

Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

From my experience, you will need a rebuild. If the car will not shift into 3 or 4, then the 3/4 clutch pack has burned up.

I am had several cars & trucks with the 700R4 and they all at one tim eot another had this issue. My Suburban went 96K miles before the 3/4 clutch pack went.

Did it make any noise or did it go quietly?

I think the trans is toast. 250 is not good for fluid or the internals. You'd be money ahead in the long run rebuilding it now instead of doing it bit by bit.

It's not a 700r4 it's a 95 so it's a 460le. The 460le shifts are controlled by the computer. So while the trans may be toast there are other things that can be fixed without a full rebuild. Unless you plan on doing the work your self take it to a trans shop so they can check line presures.

Yes, you are correct, but the internals are very similiar.

I still bet it's the 3/4 clutch pack that has burned up and you will be rebuilding the Trans. The computer basically controls shift points in the 460Le.

BTW, my 96 Suburban had a 460Le.

As Vic said, if under acceleration, if the transmission will not shift from 2nd to 3rd, its the 3-4 clutch pak typically.... from hard racing, I too have had that happen before.

But, if it just won't shift out of 1st gear, it can sometimes be the valve body..... which is a finicky thing, but cheaper to fix than rebuilding the whole transmission. I recommend you take it to a trusted transmission shop.

good luck !
