Default Bone stock 93 LT1 cam

I am thinking about yanking this and getting it rebuilt. I am thinking of going with an electric waterpump conversion, which frees me up to use any cam and timing gear chain setup I want. Is there a cheap cam that has a similar profile to the stock cam that I can use to offset the price of the waterpump conversion? I am trying to avoid corvette tax on the cam in other words and I don't need it to be able to drive the waterpump, but I am probably going to use the stock heads and don't think I can do better then the factory at picking a cam. I guess the question also involves is there anything special about a roller lifter cam over other cams, or can I put any small block chevy cam with the profile in there? There is nothing special about the LT1 cam besides the water pump dowel?

There are a lot of cams for a LT1 and they cost the same as any cam for other cars. Corvette tax usually only applies to parts specific to vettes. You cannot use any SBC cam in a LT1 and since LT1's were in Camaro's and bird's, there are plenty of people making them. The Hotcam is a good mild cam and if you want to stay close to stock you can have a custom cam like mine.

What cam are you running, is it in a 93?

In a 93 if you convert to an Elect WP you do NOT have to change the cam or the timing chain. Just remove the waterpump drive shaft and block the seal hole in the timing cover (or just leave the drive assy in there as some here have done).

Now if you just want to use a double roller timing chain because its better you will have to:

1. Change the timing cover and Optispark to a 95-96.
2. Use a camshaft with the large center recess and long dowel pin (95-97 camshaft). Or you can drill the center recess larger on your stock 93 cam and replace the dowell pin with a longer one.
