I replaced that altenator and the parts guy was very talkative. Old guy Sounded like he knew what he was doing. Said it might not have been heat that killed my altenator, but a faulty belt tentioner. Told me about his buddy buying a 84 and that it was a pos. He ended up buying the 85 and would always beat him. Not my opinion, i really don't know that much about 84's. He had said all early c4's had bad interiors saw mine and said yup those seats take a beating. Just a relief from talking to some 16 year old that looks at you funny and askes you what kind of engine you have in a corvette. I was tempted to say 4 cylinder once.

I've heard that if your tensioner is too tight it will wear out bearings in the alternator.

that is true... it is not a unique problem with just Corvettes, either - or altenators, for that matter...

any of the belt driven accessories do not respond well to over tightened belts. causes unbalanced torque on the bearings, and they are not designed to deal with that.
