Probably 400 at best, if you want long-term results. When I upgraded my LT1 to a 383 stroker with close to 500 HP, a freshly rebuilt 700R4 lasted less than 3 months. YMMV.
Not a hell of a lot. A fresh GM rebuild stood up to 6 months of babying before it broke. Rossler Trans rebuilt it and it stood for 3.5 yrs with daily beating before it broke the sun shell gear.
It really depends on the mileage and how much punishment it's put against. Heat causes the most damage, and the torque is what does it more than horsepower. If you get a tranny cooler and don't run WOT all day long, it should withstand 400+hp.
I have one behind my big block and my tranny guy has no concerns. I would just be careful with the converter selection. That is my weak point I believe
When trying to consider the durability of a transmission in a specific application, the limiting factor is going to be tires, torque, and stall speed. For instance I had a 580 ft lb 383 in front of a stock 700r4 and it lasted a long time. However I had a one wheel rear end and stock street tires so before you could really load up the trans the tires would spin (would rather replace tires than a trans). If you were running a good lsd with drag radials obviously the load is going to be back on the transmission. Think of the car as two opposing forces (engine-road) Pushing against each other. Whatever the weakest link inbetween is will see the most damage. So if you were running the same engine with a built 700r4 with a high stall converter, hardened shafts, and kevlar clutches with drag radials and a stock diffenetial the diffential is going to be the part that is going to fail first.
Its just a process of elimination. If you cant afford a transmission upgrade dont run good tires. If you didnt have lsd i wouldnt consider it a problem for now but you will need a built 700 eventually.
