My 87 vert starts fine when I take it out on any given day. My problem is after a drive , when I try to start it after sitting an hour or two I have to crank & crank. When it does finally start it kicks out smoke & misses until I rev it up & clear it out. It then runs fine. I've had people give me all kinds of answers from injectors to valve seals. So I'm here to get more input before I do something I would'nt have to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The car has 40K miles on it. Thanks to anyone who has ideas....
Same problem exactly........Starts so quick and good when the car has not been started for a while. Then I have to start it with the gas pedal for a few seconds.

Sounds like you both should be checking fuel pressure. Next time try holding the gas pedal all the way down, puts the computer into clear flood mode. You both COULD have leaky injector(s).
When you first turn the key to the ON position do you hear the fuel pump run for 2-3 seconds?
my money is on a distrib ignition module that is almost over...if the car starts ok cold and when warm after only a 5-10 minute sit, but starts hard/ runs bad after a "heat soak" rest period, i wanna double my wager
OK RedRose, that sounds like my problem. It starts ok after a short rest but after an hour or two it does'nt start. After cranking along time it starts & kicks out a cloud of smoke. So tell me what & where this module is.
Our club is going on a drive today. I put some Lucas Injector Cleaner in a new tank of gas. I'll see what happens today. Thanks alot for your input....
distrib module in inside the distrib...looks sorta like an old lemon slice from a shot of tequila that has been stepped on/ flattened/ black with age, with wires growing from each end.
these gizmos are so failure prone that i carry a spare one and the tool to change out in all my cars that have HEI ign systems, have used the spare at least a half dozen times thru the years in various cars, gotten a couple buds going away from home when theirs crapped...final 100% failure usually occurs when away from base.
And my money is on injector(s). Here's why, after an hour or two, hard start and kicks out a cloud of smoke. To me that says leaky injector(s) flooding the engine, smoke is probably fuel. And after an hour or two the ICM should have cooled off.....if that were the problem, normally when the ICM is on its way out it shows its ugly head when it gets hot.
How much is the wager redrose? this is for 76yellow. Oh yeah, the injector cleaner is good, but it won't cure leaky injectors. Still think they need to ohm the injectors and do a fuel pressure test.

Thanks redrose & rick. A couple of mechanics have told me what Rick says too. Where is a good source for injectors & how much SHOULD they cost ? And redrose I'll check the module too. I'm off on our last drive of the season.....Talk later....Thanks Alot

Had a nice drive with the club. It sat for a couple of hours. This time I put the pedal to the floor & it started right up. Was dark out so I could'nt tell what it kicked out. Anyhow, I ohmed the injectors cold today & got readings of .016 on 5 of them, 2 of them were .017 & 1 was .019. According to a video I watched here on forum, this is acceptable. Right ? When I have time I'll do the hot reading. What should the resistance be when hot.& what will it tell me ?
