Default Initial Flash for Replacement Computer

Is this something that can be done with Tunercat or is it a dealer only thing? This is on my 95.

It can be done with TunerCat. Pretty sure I have a stock 95 M6 .bin file if you need one.

Thanks for the info! My 95 is an automatic though. Can't I get the files from the tunercat website?

There are no .bin files on their website.

I think you need the definition file from tunercat to be able to 'read' your PCM

Yeah, I was thinking about that when 94 mentioned the *.bin files above.

Yes you do. But the OP was asking about reflashing the stock tune, not reading. A .bin file is your stock PCM file, or one that you have modified.

So can I get the bin file out of my stock computer and flash it into the new computer?

Yes, if you can still read the original PCM's file.

OK, I read the original file and had no problems doing that. I went to program the new PCM and it gives me a communication error. Any idea what is going on?

You say you read the original PCM's file. Did you save it to your hard drive as a .bin file? If so, you may have to try more than once to load it onto the new PCM if you are using a USB cable. Some times the USB cable does not sync correctly with a computer's USB port and you will have to try until it does show its communicating.

I'm assuming you are using either the 'Tuner' or 'Winflash' program from Tuner C.A.T.S. site to read and write (program) the .bin file that you saved to your computer? Their site does not make it clear if you also need the '$EE Definition File' along with the 'Winflash program' to read and write to the PCM. You do with the 'Tuner program' and I'm sure you will need it to save the original .bin file from the old PCM.

You can use the 'Tuner' and 'Winflash' programmers free for 30 days, but you have to buy the appropriate 'Definition' file @ $19.99.

I have a '94 A4 original .bin file if you need it. Its the same as the '95 A4. PM me if you need the .bin file.

Yes, I purchased both the tuner program and the definition file. I read and saved the file with the tuner program. Then tried to write the old file to the new computer. I tried several times to connect, turned off my virus software and firewall, but no luck. I have another 95 BIN file I found online in case I couldn't read this one, thanks for your offer though.

Can you successfully read the new computer with tunercat? Or scan it with datamaster? Don't go trying to flash it if you haven't established that you can talk to it or you'll end up with a doorstop.

Are you flashing it installed in the car, and if so did the new computer come from a Y body or is it perhaps from an F or B? If it's from an F or B my experience is that you have to bench flash it.

No, I cannot read the new computer with tunercat. I have not tried datamaster. It gives me the same error when trying to read. It seems like it talks for a few seconds and spits out the communication error. I don't think it ever actually started trying to write the program.

It is for a Y body. Its a remanufactured ACDelco replacement.

I emailed Tunercat's tech email over the weekend and received a reply today. They replied as follows:

If the PCM is new and never been programmed then you'll probably have to have the dealer program it the first time. Then you should be able to read and program the PCM without any problem.
