Default 383 golen long block

Guys. thinking about buying a 383 long block from Golen. Do these guys require the core from my car? At this point I am thinking about using the standard build with the cast Scat crank. Please chime in if you have any experience with these motors.

i have a golen shortblock. You dont need a core. They use a brand new block. Call Chad up and talk to him about your goals and such, and he will set you up with the proper block.

For me i told him i'd have around 500 on motor and dumping a good 150-200 shot on top. I wanted all forged and 11 to 1 compression. he set me up good.

They do good work. Make sure you get STANDARD tension rings, unless you just like to add oil every 500 miles.

I have a Golen short block also. They do excellent work. I recommend Chad Golen any day.

He has a really, really good rep. Lots of pricing right on his website and seems willing to talk at length about what you what to accomplish and what you'll need to do it.

They don't use new blocks they're old blocks but reconditioned/machined etc etc which are just as good. In most cases its easier to find a 2 bolt and just make it a stronger 4 bolt splayed setup.

Anyhow I think Chad is great. I spoke with him at length about doing my shortblock and although I didn't end up going with him I would certainly reccomend him to anyone. The only people I would ever want to build my motor are those who have done many of them. And he is one of them !

I would stay as far away as possible from Golen. It was a $13,000 mistake for me.

I've heard all good things except for maybe one or two on the f-body forum.

I heard some stuff too, but didn't want to post because it was second hand knowledge.

I've heard mixed reviews, but most have been positive.

You should try using an electric vacuum pump on your vette. Crankcase vacumm will improve the ring seal with those low tension rings and improve oil retention. You can also use it to drive your brake booster, returning that manifold vaccum to cylinder filling.

i have only heard of one instance where golen made a mistake. A guy that worked for him did a build and screwed up something but he replaced the motor in the end

For me i'm making 400whp n/a and well over 500whp on the bottle i estimate judging by my 128 mph trap speed and raceweight. Its holding up well and i have no complaints

Golen has built another thirdgen member's 383 for a F1R procharger running near 900whp i think it was this last time out. SOLID built foundation. Golen nowadays is doing a good job

Long story short, I got 500 easy street miles out of the motor, a 396 LTx. As per Chad and his warranty, I pulled the motor, wasted a day and $100 on gas, drove it up to him to only do the same 2 weeks later to pick up a box of mangled parts. He seemed like a real good guy when I was buying.

wonder what happened there... i beat on mine almost immediately after startup. gave it a few warm ups and cool downs, checked for leaks fixed them, make sure everything was tight still and drove it 20-25 miles, did some short pulls, medium pulls and longer pulls from mild throttle to almost full and it was ready to go

Raced it with like 150 miles on the motor or so beat on it ever since.

I heard Golen isn't bad at all. But have you thought of finding a kick azz machine shop, and having them do it?

Yeah, I am talking to a shop who builds short track engines. They do a lot of 383's. I have been doing a lot of reading to figure out what to use for the build. I am tempted to use AFR's 195 heads on a forged 383 with 5.7 " rods. There are many here though that have used LE ported heads with a custom ground cam. Anyone who wants to chime in with their experience would be most welcome.
Thanks

LE does great work, and he has amazing customer service. He answered all of my stupid questions, did the work on time, for the agreed price, and the results were better than promised. I highly recommend him.
