I'm just about to put my 87 away for the winter and I need to take the battery out. I store the car in an old furniture factory which is totally dry and secure but the temperature gets below freezing and there is no power to hook up my battery tender.
Is there an easier way to remove the batter than having to unscrew the front rocker panel? When I replaced it last year, the job took me about an hour.
Takes me 2 minutes to take the side panel off and pull the battery.
Do what is described below, except don't remove any of the torx or regular 7mm bolts described under the door. There is absolutely no need to remove those and a complete waste of time. I don't even know why they even say to remove those.
Don't remove the bottom bolt all the way. Just loosen it, the panel is slotted to allow you to pull it out. Otherwise, it's very hard to get that lower bolt started again.
...i myself didn't feel like screwing around with a body panel so, i simply unbolted the cruise control and if i recall a support arm (it's been a while) and lifted the battery in/out at an angle - NO SWEAT!

This is my way also. The Greenwood kit I have makes the side panel nonremovable.

Thats how I do it. I think its like 6 1/2" bolts to pull out, but there is less of a chance of messing up the body lines this way--I think.
Can the brace from the frame to the body be removed and reinstalled without the body twisting and not allowing the bolt holes to line up?
No need to worry about body twisting and the brace has lots of movement when the bolts are loose. I prefer this method over the body panel for reasons similar to those previously stated.
