I recently purchased a '93 conv LT1 with 29,000 miles. The distributor module was replaced prior to purchase due to failure. I have heard that moisture in the distributor can cause the module to fail. Does the distributor not get wet when driving in the rain and when washing engine. I noticed that Mid-America sells a seal kit for the distributor. Is this something that I should invest in? I want to wash my engine, but I am concerned that I could get moisture in the distributor and cause another module failure. Some of you experts please enlighten me on this subject. Thanks, Jim
Re: Distributor Module / Moisture Related Damage (lightman45)
Welcome to the world of the LT engine! And welcome to the forum!
As long as you don't drive through deep puddles, normal driving doesn't get the optispark wet. As far as washing the engine... DON'T! Well, don't douse the engine with water. Wipe the compnents off with a cloth. I take a little simple green and a rag to clean the tope of the engine and I'm realllly careful about getting any water anywhere near the front of the engine.
The most common chain of events that lead to the opti failing is the water pump leaking into the distributor and then the water can't get out so it begins to corode the sensors, then, well, you get to have the opti experience.
Save the wave! :seeya
Re: Distributor Module / Moisture Related Damage (lightman45)
that part is not the best vent for the opti... it is not a true flow through design... what you need is the GM part, 12556174. vent harness kit for 95/96 opti... it is about $20.00 at your local Chevy dealer.
I would not mess with it until the opti needs replaced. thats along way away!
