Just recently replaced rear y-pipe and mufflers (2 weeks ago) now car is hard to start when engine is warm. It will start but immediately dies. Pumping the gas does not change the way it starts. I can finally get it going by reving the engine immediately and holding a high rpm for 15 to 30 seconds, then it seems to run fine. Starts right up when its cold. Would a plugged cat cause this? I did not replace the cat but did have to take off and put back on due to breaking bolts during disassembly. The old cat appeared OK but it is probaly the original. The enging does burn a little oil at start up probally due to bad valve guide seals but no plan to replace those any time soon. The car has 60,000 miles on it. I was thinking about unbolting the cat to see if that fixes the problem. Any thoughts?
Thanks for the help.
BTW - Thanks for all of the advise on exhaust recommendations. I put in the Dynomax y-pipe with the crossover balance tube and the Dynomax mufflers (from Mid America) great low rumble with a tolerable amount of cabin resonance. Very happy!!! Thinking now that I should have replaced the cat also.
Your fuel pump is half dead. Well not really pump, it is bad hose between pump and steel pipe inside tank. Check fuel pressure, easiest place to hook up gauge is on top of tank. I attached battery charger to pump wires. They are 1st and 3rd. Wire in the middle is for fuel sender. Black one is ground.
When mine had these symptoms it was the ignition control module.
I'd lean this way, too, as the hose issue should surface whether hot or cold.
Given that mileage, you are close to needing throttle body shaft bushing work.
My cat lasted longer and expect difficulties reaching high RPM if the cat is plugged. Ya know, restricting the outflow of that air pump (engine)? I accelerated the clogging with engine mods, as the car ran too rich.
