Guys - It appears that my headlight dimmer switch took a crap. :( Anyone out there replace it themselves? If so, how much of a PITA was it to pull the steering column apart? Would you do it again or have a dealership do it? TIA! :)
It is not hard at all. All you have to do is #1 Remove the housing cover end cap by pulling toward front of vehicle. #2 Remove the electrical harness connector and grommet. #3 Pull toward driver door to release detent/multifunction turn signal lever. That is from 1991 vette service man hope this helps. :D
Re: Dimmer switch inop - any advice? (Whitevette91)
I just fixed mine a month ago. I proactively purchased a replacement switch, then found out that the original was simply out of adjustment. On my '92 I took apart the plastic pieces surrounding the turn-signal stalk/dimmer, thinking the switch was somewhere closeby. Turned out to be at the foot of the column, just above the pedals. The biggest pain I had was getting those damned little plastic pieces back correctly. I couldn't find any clear assembly/disassembly pictures or instructions and it ain't real obvious how they go together.
What I'd do is check that the long rod from the turn-signal to the switch is actually in the correct position. You might be able to simply loosen the switch, poke the rod into the 'hole' receptacle, then adjust the switch.

Thanks for the reply. My '93 service manual says the same thing, but it looks a bit more involved than what they describe. As a matter of fact, it simply says "replace dimmer switch" under the diagnostics section.

Good luck.

Thanks Glenn. I assume that you had to remove the carpeted kick-panel underneath the steering wheel to get access to the switch?
Yup, and if I remember correctly another metal panel between the carpeted panel and the column. The column came down easily with 2 bolts. I just sat in the seat, lifted and adjusted the column position to gain access to the switch and flailed away. Its a long reach and small area without much access, but I can vouch for the fact that it is possible without removing the column or the seat.
