Charcoal canister return line from canister to rear gas tank. 89 vert. I flunked my Calif smog test yesterday. Dyno'ed ok. Flunked on canaster vacuum from tank to canister. The line leaving the canister is rubber until near the Master cylinder. It then becomes a metal line. Does this line stay metal until it gets near the gas tank? I have looked in my FSM with no results. Thanks
Corvette Mike
BTW those of you fortunite enough not to participate in smog testing, Im jealous. The Smog ****'s in Ca. test back to 1976

Mike,
If I remember right it is a solid line all the way back 'til about a foot or 2 from the tank. The line runs along the outer frame rail from the front to the back of the car. I was smelling gas fumes from my car and found that I had the same hose your talking about rot/break off near the tank. This was a # of years ago so I can't really give you specifics about what to look for.
To specifically answer your question, I don't remember how my 86 was setup.
However, I'd first suspect the loss of vacuum holding as the fault of the rubber hoses not the metal line. So I'd first replace those because they DO become really brittle over time.
On my 86 a few of them would actually crumble in my hand.

On my 90, from the canister/solenoid ***. rubber hose to metal line located by the A arm. It stays metal (under the entire car) until just before the gas tank (at rear cross beam seen when tire carrier is removed) then a short piece (approx.3") of hose is used (goes around rear cross beam). Metal line is then used up and around the side of the tank, and then another short piece of hose to connect to the tank (visible w/gas cap boot removed).
no smog ***** here, I am using the original stock line to the front of the car to vent the tank.......no canister, or purge crap on mine.
On my '89 I noticed excessive hissing when I removed the gas cap. Turns out the line you are talking about was plugged. I unhooked it back by the gas tank and blew compressed air in it, towards the tank. I could hear it in the tank. Tried to blow it forwards, nothing. I cut the line about 1/2 way up towards the front of the car, and it blew forwards (and a big cloud of crap blew out of the line where I had it unhooked near the canister). Treid to blow back through and nothing. I replaced that chunk of metal line that was clogged with rubber fuel line hose hose and clamped it on. All is well. If you have excessive hissing when you remove the gas cap on a hot day then you likely have a clogged vent line between the tank and the canister. Cheap easy fix, just takes a little time.
Thanks for all your help. Thats what makes this forum such a valueable asset to us all. From knowlageable people like you willing to share your knowlage.
The smog tech offered to "smoke the line" to find the leak. $100 plus parts. I told him WTF KMA.
Car dyno'ed out perfect. Ca. Smog ****'s are comming out with a new dyno by 2010. The are going to start testing hybridsLOL
