You exhaust would be needed for any motor too. Drop that from your difference.
A 315 rwhp motor doesn't have to be rough running or leaky either.
Do some more figuring.
Not brand new but a 2000 Camaro motor (9 years old now) w/30-50k on it could be had for $3000. Probably get the tranny too for that price. Heck if you look around you may even get the whole car for $5000.
The point is that the traditional mods on an L98 are not cheap/easy or effective for that matter.

Well that combo on mine with headers ran 13.22 at 102 this fall. Changing it out for a SR this winter.
Something doesn't add up for me. Typically, 10hp gain gets you about .1 second faster in the 1/4 mile. To gain 1 full second requires 80-100 hp.
You improved from 14.2 to 13.2. That should have required 100 hp.
You showed where (and I agree) TPI improvements on a stock motor get you about 15-20hp. So, you got 60-80hp more thru exhaust upgrades? That is truely amazing.

Flame suit on.
An LS swap or two has been done here and in DigitalCorvettes.com (but with new parts) in the $8-10K range. Yeah, you can find used parts for less and take a risk. Maybe you could find a modded TPI motor for $1500 with similar mileage.
I'm not sure it's a fair comparison, but it's an option not usually considered. More labor to get everything to fit. What about computer changes? That all has to be replaced/rerouted too. Is there weight differences that could change front suspension? Fitment to radiator and other surrounding parts.
You can get 300rwhp with a GM Hot Cam, and ported or a good set of aftermarket heads, and run mid to low 12s and drive it daily. And you can do it with 3.07 gears.
I thought about putting a LS engine in my C4, but I know it will cost more than $3500 and that's with me doing the installation. And unless the LS is going to go low 11s (the way I buy it) it's not worth the extra money I will spend.
I think that it's worth the money if the engine in the car is blown (when your starting out with nothing)or the block is cracked. But you can make hp easier with the LS engines.

Sorry to disagree with you but if your going into the heads then you are going to need the rest of the stuff on the list I provided LTR Intake LT Headers Roller rockers exhaust tune etc.... Total bill is much closer to $5000. Trust me its the first thing I looked at when I got this car. LTR Intake alone is only worth maybe 10 HP and its a stretch because there is NO DYNO DATA on a stock 350 bottom its always a 383 everyone points too. Its not the same the 383 breathes more air. To the OP I'd even be willing to say intake by itself yields 0 HP.
If you're not trying to set the world on fire, a stock TPI set-up can actually do a little better than most know..... with a mild 383, I ran the stock TPI to a 12.0 1/4 mile and would have been in the 11's if I had the transmission set-up for shifting earlier.
Don't get me wrong, once you have done some serious modifications, you'll pick up some very good power with aftermarket intakes, but for most, I would start in the middle of your motor and work your way out..... start off with a cam and then work your way out. I'm betting that with a 350, bone stock TPI, ported cylinder heads and the right cam & converter & headers they could have a nice docile low 12 second very street friendly racecar. Upgrade the intake in the future and easily go into the 11's.

213HP Before? Car needed the tune up it got and the intake did little to nothing for $1,000.
My case is made: LT Headers, Intake, new injectors, cat back exhaust, TPIS plenum port and pressure regulator 230HP more like 225HP notice there is no third pull when the desired numbers where reached. 12hp for for over a $2700 is a waste. Sorry just my .02 worth. Sorry to keep editing but I keep going back and reading his web page and adding up everything he did. What are bone stock tuned up good running car #'s 225-230 I beleive?
= $4850 = 315 Rwhp = Rough running, lopy, non-daily driver, leaky, constant attention = no fun = drop in an LS1 and forget about it and save $2000 and 80 hours labor. If I'm wrong please advise
The $4850 part is about right. The rough running, non daily driver, leaky, constant attention + no fun part, not right. Someone needs help wrenching if they end up with all or any of those problems.

I'm pretty sure most of C4 owners know and agree with what you're trying to say. I went thru the same struggle. I considered that a new motor would make more sense. But, you get what you pay for...
One thing pointed out to me early in my learning process is that the items you mention above are all extraneous to the motor. They are requirements for ANY hp motor you might install. You simply need good routing to get air in/out of any motor. After you did all of them, then a car (motor) would be ready for any upgrade you'd wanna take.
Any car where you're not willing to spend the extra money for a motor, exhaust, intake, tuning, headers, and all the "extras" is a car you don't want to mod. Buying chucks of cars and piecing them together is another tack. Buying someone's already modded ride might be the best bang-for-the-buck.
Intake = $1,000 F.I.R.S.T or ported LTR system (Including new TB)
LT headers = $750
Heads (ported or new) = $1200
Cam = $250
Exhaust (hi flow cats) = $300
Rest of exjaust = $700
Tune = $350
Roller rockers = $200
Misc parts and fluids $100
Labor = Endless or 100 + hours $0
What I paid
Intake = self ported LTR $400
Headers = Free cracked headers I fixed
Heads = stock
Cam = stock
Exhaust total $450 true duals 2.5" no cats, Hooker mufflers
$100 stock replacement 2200 rpm convertor
$25 TCI shift kit
$125 IIRC UD pulleys
No tune or rockers yet
Parts sold $1000+
I've probably gained more then I spent in selling parts that were extra weight, visors, A/C, radio, etc. Do the work yourself, it's easy. Your way way off on cost. 13.22 at 102 didn't cost much and feels enormously faster then stock.
