Default console lights

on an 89 automatic, is there suppose to be a light that lights up the transmission selector(p,r,n,d,ect.) on the console? thanks.

Yes I believe there is a light indicating the shifter position. I have a 93 6-speed, but my shop manual talks about removing the I/P harness connectors to the lighter, rear compartment lid release switch and indicator lamp (automatic transmission only) to remove the console trim. You can remove the console trim piece that covers the shifter by removing the screws located under the console cover (I think at least one is hidden under the fabric in the console) plus the one under the cup holder. Once you have the screws out you can raise it from the back and lift it up. If you want to remove it completely you'll need to remove the shifter button and the wiring connectors. I haven't removed the console trim on an automatic. I have done my manual and it's pretty straight forward. I suspect you have a bad bulb.

Good luck,

Jim

The '89 is different than the '93, there are two screws at the front of the console cover, two in about the middle and two are under the console lid. Remove all 6 screws and you can lift it high enough to change the bulb. Be careful of the socket, mine was brittle and it broke and I can only find them in complete harnesses. Before you lift the console cover, put the trans in neutral and when you lower it back down, be sure the shift indicator fork goes back down over the small rod so your indicator will work properly.
