Easy to remove the screen; on my 96 there was a metal clip in a groove; so remove the clip and them I gently tapped on mine from the backside and it came right out. Be careful not to damage the element. I have done this procedure on three vettes; never any problems.
If your careful then the screens can be glued back on. The screens are glued to a circular disk, which in turn is glued to the MAF, if you pop off the disk the screens will be unharmed.
I pulled the screens on mine pretty easily. I didn't cut them out.. just poked them out from the other side, so I can still put mine back in, just have to be careful when doing so. I don't intend to put them back in though. I've heard there is as much as a 100cfm increase in air flow. That makes the TB the most restricting part of the intake system I believe.
I don't know if you want to bother with this one. I ran a consistant 14.0 in my stock 97 Trans Am, LT1 auto. At the strip one day I figured I would remove the screens to see if I could get that elusive 13 second quarter mile run. I didn't notice any difference and my track times and mph were identical. I have heard of people getting poorer drivability because the screens help smooth the airflow through the maf. I have never seen anyone gain anything at the track by removing the screens.
If there's no gain and there might be a downside, it might not be worth doing.
Here are the numbers you are looking for
529 CFM - max. flow rate stock
711 CFM - max. flow rate with screens removed
750 CFM - max. flow rate with screens and cooling fins removed
Since the screens don't exist in LS1 engines.. i figure GM figured out they aren't needed. And ANYTHING in the intake that takes up space that air could be flowing through is a restriction.
I talked with a buddy that worked at a speed shop and has loads of chassis dyno time. He did specific tests to see if removing the screens would help, and at least on the later LT1/4 cars, he saw absolutly no increase on the dyno. This included stock and slightly modded cars, like cut airlids, K&N, TB bypass....
On the earlier cars, the screens are different and do seem to benefit from removing the screens.
Personally, I have left the screens in for now to reduce the chance of damage to the element, but hey, whatever works for you.

What about a 383 with a HOT cam and other goodies? I would think that it would help open up the inflow of air.. especially with the use of a 52 or 58mm TB
In visiting with a neighbor who is in the local club and gutted his MAF he said that the guest speaker who is a C4 expert said thet the screens arent necessary and the computer system can make up for anything that could change.
