do i really need to take all this crap off?
in order to do a water pump on a 84 vette the chilton manual says you have to disconnect the ac system have it evacuated and remove the compressor,
it also mentions relieving fuel pressure and disconnecting fuel lines
is all that crap really nessisary to pull the water pump off this dumb thing?

Don't know about a '84 but later engines the compressor mounts off the WP bolts so it has to come off first.
BUT , there is enough lenght in the hoses to hang it to one side without disconnecting them so no evac / refill needed.
And the fuel ines run through the compressor mount so they have to be disconnected

Take a scrap piece of cardboard and make a diagram of each bolt's location. Then punch a hole with a philips screwdriver and insert the bolts in relation to their installed positions.
Wish it was my idea....
FWIW, you can also measure the particular bolts (helps with runner-manifold bolts) and write their measurement next to the bolt. This is a great help in case any bolt falls out if the cardboard hole loosens. Measuring also helps when you take multiple ones in for replacement to the hardware store and don't want to carry the piece of cardboard in.

You'll probably have to disconnect the A/C hoses and remove the compressor. I had to on my early 85. The advice on the torx bolt is good. It took me a while to find that one. Also had to remove the smog pump and disconnect fuel lines. The fuel lines are routed through the compressor bracket that is mounted to the water pump.
It is a pain to get to the water pump but should not take more than a day for the whole job. Recharging the A/C was half the cost of the job. ($200) Have fun. Its a good project to get to know what's under the hood.

my ac dosnet work anyway nothing really works on the car
why i bought this bastard i dont know im thinking about deleting the ac either with the bracket if i cant find one soon and quick ship it or browse other ideas
but i plan on ripping all the lines off tomarrow while im in there with the accumulator and any other ac component i wont use
i live in michigan if its sunny out and im driving it the top will be off anyway so ac isnt a problem

I can tell you that when I replaced the water pump on my '96 LT4, I neither disconnected the AC compressor fittings or the serpintine belt - both of which the manual said were required.
I'd suggest you just go for it and see what happens.

I probably installed 3 different water pumps in a row and finally settled on a "flowkooler" brand pump. My car is an 86. I did NOT have to evacuate the AC at all. You can just pull on the hoses and move the compressor off to the side. It'll look funny but mine didn't leak even after three times.

Just need to check WP rotation on '84; may be normal rotation already
IIRC, the L98s require removal of the AC compressor bracket because it is on the two water pump studs. Additionally, if the belt tensioner is not removed from the AC bracket, there is not enough clearance to even remove the AC bracket - just my experience from reading and doing the job on my '91 L98.

Still, you do NOT have to evacuate the A/C system at all. Just disconnect the compressor bolts and pull the compressor out of the way. I did this three times in a week and I guarantee it works.
Remember, One of the compressor bolts will be notched so don't lose that one. Try to put the bolts exactly where they came from and jiggle the compressor as you hand tighten the bolts initially.
Good luck!
