My 86 also had a brace from the front of the starter (nose) to the block. The bolt on that one is a little more difficult to access, but not too hard.
I found that replacing it was more difficult since that sucka is HEAVY. The smaller on on my 96 was a LOT easier because it was easier to hold up while starting a bolt.

If you have an automatic, the book says to remove the cooling lines. I have done it 3 times just squeezing the starter past the lines. Now I have a little starter from a 91. Slips in and out with room to spare.
Only "difficult" part is squeezing it through the lines.
Make sure to pick up a pack of shims just in case. Driving back to the store because you were too cheap to spend a few bucks on a pack of shims really sucks. Ask me how I know...
Been there, done that. With friends gathered around laughing thinking I'm screwing around. As the old saying goes, it's all fun and games 'til someone gets smashed by a transmission.
Ive replaced these in the middle of nowhere. Pretty simple procedure. Just disconnect the battery before you do anything or you might see little gold sparks flying!!!
