'84 antenna finial removal help

This probably seems like the most basic question, but I need some help. I'm doing the 'antenna fix' on my car and everything is now apart with the exception of removing the antenna finial (top)so the mast can slide out of the tube. I've tried a vise, vise grip, WD-40, etc. but it will not budge. I'm trying to not destroy it in the process as the '84 style finial is unique to the year, I believe, and will be re-used as part of the fix. Any suggestions for this most simple, yet almost embarassing issue?

Have you tried applying heat with a propane torch ??

The propane torch and a vise did the trick. I just never thought this simple procedure would be such a pain...

The downside of stainless is galling. 25 years, doesn't help, either !!

Its easy - first peal back the fender --

Remove antenna

Repaint fender --

And don't forget to fill the hole
