ZF black tag
So, how hard is it to find a zf black tag 6 speed? My transmission is on the last leg. Too much slop in the stick and the R is grinding like an banshee. I have checked fleabay and all looks to be either well used stuff or new blue tags. I would like to replace with a stock black tag, but I really don't know what kind of mods might need to be done for a blue tag. I have an 89 model. What would you do?

Only thing necessary to install a blue tag is the throw out bearing requires updating to the late style/size.

You can send it to
ZFDoc and he'll rebuild it for you.
It'll work better than new, and he'll even tweak your shifter of choice to make it shift like butter.

You said it yourself, black tags are hard to come by (especially given the time of year).
I say send it to ZFDoc.

Where is the tag. when I ordered it, GM only had 1 part # for all the years. they were almost out of them at that point.

Go ahead and contact ZFdoc even he'll tell you to buy a new blue tag. By the time you pay for parts to repair your black tag and labor you well exceed the cost of a new blue tag (actually the best thing you can do is purchase a new blue tag ship it to ZFdoc and have him trick it out and you're still probably cheaper than repairing the black tag). If you're worried about the extra torque holding capacity of the black over the blue, don't all you need to do is look at what some '96 LT4 cars a running to know the blue tag will hold up just fine.

you can run a blue tag ZF......it's a very stout manual...people get too caught up in the blue/black tag.....I've run both in my car with no issues w/either other than noise with the aluminum FW....

AND to "complicate" the conversation NOT ALL BLACK TAGS are created equal!! 610 Nm(450) 540 Nm(400)
All ZF's with a "black tag" have a "lift ring" for reverse!
Only '89 - '91 builds are 610 Nm with "some" '92/'93 being 610Nm and the balance of the builds are 540Nm
L98/LT1 builds 032/036/044 are 610Nm
LT5 buillds 031/035/045 are 610Nm
'93 LT1 build 046 is a 540 Nm
'94 LT1 build 084 is a 540Nm
'93 LT5 build 047 is a 540Nm
'94 LT5 build 081 is a 540Nm
-------------------------------
'95 - '96 all builds are blue with "Crash Thru"
