Just a quick air pump failure story. My pump seized on the car, it made the car seem like the battery was just weak enough it wouldn't turn over. So I bumped started it down an incline then whack!!!!!!!!!! The damn pulley was torn clean off the smog pump. I can't remember what was lodged in there but it was definately never going to pump air ever again. I don't know if anyone else ever has experienced this.
The same thing happened to mine when I washes it. I took it apart and the bearings were shot.
DON'T! wash the air pump
How could you tell the bearings were shot? The large bearing in mine still turns. I couldn't tell if the little bearings turned or not. I may just replace it for peace of mind.
It does spin freely now, but in one spot in the rotation, it hangs a bit. I know it pumps air, but I'm not sure if it is supposed to do that, or if part of it is still seized a little.
If it has seized once your chancing a breakdown by continuing to use it.
Ok, I'll just replace it. Though, one guy here said he got one from Autozone and the threads for the bolt that goes on the back for the intake base were different.
So, I'll check that out before I take it home. If the threads are different. I won't take it, and I'll call Cardone to see what the thread pitch is and see if I can find a replacement bolt. If that didn't work, I could always swap the back of the pump out.
