i bought them from ecklers, did not install them yet

i've seen them on some cars here.

do they really help keep the engine compartment clean?

or is it not worth the trouble?

and don't lecture me about backing out and all that stuff again

Do you have a pic?

If they restrict airflow, PASS ON IT.

I actually removed the center section of my wheel wells to let the heat out.

wow, interesting thought, hmmmmm...

did your underhood temps go down?

http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...2&dept_id=1813

does not having the sheild make a mess of the engine?

thanks mr. cunningham

Not really

The temps are lower around town, rarely hits 200.

A little higher on the HW due to the wheel well pressure ~180 on average, was ~178before

Installed these on my '91 about three years ago. Did not notice any change in temp here in PA. But, because they restrict dirt, etc. from entering the engine compartment this suggests that air flow must be curved too. I believe that do work as advertised and have not noticed, in particular, many small road cinders, fragments, etc. entering compartment.

Had them on my '84 and now on the '88, the flexible vinyl ones on the latter. Work great for keeping the engine bay really clean. Temps follow the nominal values as below, but I don't do any high speed superhighway driving (they don't exist here, just those winding, hilly two-lane scenic roads C4s love). Sometimes get onto dusty gravel roads, so the bay would be a mess without them.

dust washes off...heat kills everything.

early mid-years had overheating probs that vanished when the factory opened the "gill vents" on later years

please show a picture if possible of why my gills(89) are not open compared to ones that are, can i open them and eat cake?

panteras had that problem almost all of them had to cut hood vents,

in our cars what is the path of travel for superheat air?, and doesn't the turning of the wheel/tire create buffetting(tubulence) in front of that path; in the wheelwell, effectively negating any "stremlined ram effect out" would it not be better to mod the gill and have it go out the side like it suppose to?

I am considering the rubber type to help keep my polished engine cleaner.

my 96 has them from the factory.
all the dirt and grime that accumulates will hold the heat in the motor anyway, so I see no difference.

"mid-years" refered to 1963-67, 63/64 were not gill vented, 65 big block intro demanded a final answer to the heat prob and holes were in...c4's have the battery hurting air flow on the driver side, pass side has it's share of impediments, bigger gills would likely help a bit if you can abide the sight of intestines...wheel-house venting ain't great but "every little bit"....

speaking of "littles", removing the foam side seals below the hood latches and "trimming" some of the cowl top seal (leave it uncut near the distributor to stop rain run-off) will help air/heat flow from the engine compartment...trade is that hot air (and perhaps tiny engine noise) may find the operator (YOU) to some degree.

I've got those seals notched and the stock shields removed, the car stays cool even on a road course.
