No, maybe I wasn't clear, but both the cam end and Opti have keyed splines. Of course you want to determine where the cam key is to make it easier to mate the Opti. The way to do this is simply to look at the spline location when you remove the old Opti. Then when it is time to install new Opti, simply turn the splined drive(and thus the rotor position) to the relative position that it was in on the old Opti. It usually takes 2 or 3 times to get it lined up correctly. When you finally get it aligned correctly, the Opti will sort of "snap" in place with very little resistance.Never force the Opti on, as this is an indication that the splined key is not in the right place.

For the Gen I Opti, I find it much easier to insert the splined drive shaft into the Opti first, and then mount the Opti to the front of the engine.

When I took the rotor off the timing disc and spacer fell off. First question does the smaller disc go behing the timing disc twds the block?
Second it looks like the discs can only go one way, with the part number of the disc facing fwd; Third: How the heck do you keep the disc's on the shaft so you can get the rotor on? Whats the trick???????

Default AC/Alternator Removal—Necessary Or Not??

Yo, I'm impressed with the detailed info/pix for the removal of the OPTI.
As I'm getting ready to replace the wires on my '94 LT1, it has been suggested by some of members to swing the AC/Alternator units to the
side (without making any wire/etc. disconnections) to replace the driver side wires. And some of the members suggest this is NOT necessary. This has not been mentioned here on this particular Thread. What's Up. THANKS

Are you sure???

I'm asking because I'm helping my friend put an engine together(he bought an unassemled '93 Lt1) and I think he's missing some parts in the timingchain cover. I have a '95 and I know how it is, but I never worked on a '93 before. I thought there's something that is supposed to be bolted on the cam end. Something with the splines. I searched everywhere for an explanation but came empty. And how is the waterpump to be driven, the same way as the '95 Lt1???
