Default Code 32 on my 88

My SES light is coming on and I am getting a code 32 which is a faulty EGR circuit. It only happens when I have been on the interstate for about 15 minutes or so. The car seems to run fine. When I shut it down and restart the SES light goes off until I am back on the interstate again for 15 minutes or so. I have a service manual but the diagnostics require a scanner. Any ideas of how to find my issue?

9 times out of ten (assming no vacuum leak) it is the egr diagnostic switch located in the egr crossover tube. $10 fix.

Thanks Pete. After some reading here I'm thinking that may be my issue. I will test it first. I found this great post that explains the system and how to test the components. Much easier to understand than the FSM.

Mine ended up being the EGR valve. The diaphragm on the valve rotted away, resulting in a vacuum leak. I replaced it with a new one, cleared the ECM codes and voila! No more Code 32.

Same here! Had the exact symptoms as avgjoe described and a new EGR valve fixed it.

And the proper way to figure out which of the above caused it is to put a vacuum on the EGR and see if it holds or not.I use a Mighty Vac. If it does then buy the switch.

Hey Joe have you been to my Bro-in-laws place in Harrisonburg Dave's Taverna?

Although mine was visibly deteriorated even before I completely removed it and applied vacuum via the Mighty Vac tool, so it was patently obvious mine had gone ****-up some time ago.

Dave's Taverna is a fantastic place to eat! I go there regularly!

I hope to work some more on the EGR issue this weekend and I will try all your suggestions. I've been out of town and very busy with work so I haven't had a chance to work on it. I will keep you posted on what I find. How hard is it to replace the EGR valve? It looks like it could be a big job at first glance.
