Last year I decided it was time to scratch a life-long itch. The C4 seemed like it would fit the bill - it was affordable and suitable for a daily driver in the summer months. I found mine on eBay, but it happened to be at a local dealership. I looked it over, took a test drive and wrote 'em a check.
Sure, they would take you in during the years that I am disowned, which is approximately 50% of the time !! But I am keen to good timing, and seem to hit the right years to be in their good graces, so good luck ....
While doing some internet research for my Dad (recently purchased an 87 coupe) I was surprised to notice how affordable the C-4's were. I was not even considering purchasing a car at the time, but was drawn in like a moth to a light bulb!
I found my vert. @ another vette forum site. It was love at first sight. The right color, miles, convertible and in my price range.
Next thing you know I'm booking a flight to Fort Meyers, Fla.
I met my buddy Walter Olesen in 1957 when we both worked at Town Auto Chevrolet in Allentown Pa. We became best buddies and later started working at Mack Trucks only one day apart in 1962. He was one of the fussiest people in the world. His cars were always spotless and as he was a great mechanic they were always in perfect condition. He had every toy in the world as he and his wife never had any kids. Four and one half years ago he sat in my family room and told me that he had leukemia and had six months to live. He asked me if I wanted to buy his 90 coupe and named a very reasonable price. I bought Walts Vette and have maintained it in perfect condition ever since. He died six months later. I still miss him. Very sad, but nice that you get to honor your good friend every time you take it for a spin.
I'm new to the forum and a brand new Vette owner (as of yesterday). Thought this would be a good thread to chime in on for my first post. I traded a bone stock 2000 SVT Ford Contour and a salvage title '98 Ducati 916 straight up for my '93 white on red 6 speed with 100k miles. I'm 26 now and this is the first Vette I've owned, but I've had the Vette bug since high school when my father had his midlife crisis and came home in a numbers matching 45k mile '77.
I had just got a Big bonus from my work, and the wife told me to spend it on what ever I wanted. I decided I wanted to get another IR2231 impact gun and headed off to the Pawn Shop. I had plans later that day to go down to this used car lot up the street, and pick up a really clapped out C4 that was sitting behind the building at a buy here pay here lot and have always found I can get the price down quite a bit by saying cash right now. I went into the pawn shop, and while looking around (and by the way, they did not have the impact I wanted) I asked who owns that C4 out front. A guy said he did, and while the Pawn guy was on the phone, we went out and looked at his car. Walked around is kicked the tires and all. I asked him out of curiosity how much was he asking, and he said $9,000. The whole time we were talking he cell kept ringing and this could only be good for me. About the time I was about to walk away, the pawn guy came out and told him he could not loan him anymore cash. I overheard this and the guy that owned the vette said I have to make payroll isnt there anything you can do. The guy said no and walked in. About that time I came back around the car kicking the tires again, and said what did you say you wanted for it. He said he would take $8,000 and I said no and started dickering. Well when all was said and done I paid $5,500 for it with 70,000 on the odo, and a strong running car that had obviouly sat quite a bit, but did have an updated California smog, so I pulled the trigger. For the most part up until just recent, I have been driving it, racing it and all. I have since moved to Utah, and it has been pretty reliable. Well until the rods just recently started knocking, and so out comes the original engine for a rebuild.... but that is another story, and quite a long one come to find out.
Saw mine for sale in the local newspaper. Called about it that morning and by that afternoon it was sitting in my garage. One trip to the bank for $8500 and I was an owner.
My dad ordered it in August of 86 (1 month after his 40th birthday) and it showed up just before Christmas 86. Fast forward to June 2000 and he decides that he wants a new one. His new 2000 shows up (still red with a black top and manual transmission) and he has no need for the 87. I told him I'd take it off his hands. I've put more money in it than it's possibly worth but everytime I get behind the wheel, the smile makes it all worthwhile!
I bought it 3 years ago for $5000 after finding it on Autotrader. After thousands spent on repairs and it still sucks I can see why the owner wanted a C5.
