Default Heeeeelllllllppppppp

Need to get my front bumper cover off my 87. I know there is an easier way than some would think. Like removing the entire assembly from the frame horns. If anybody has tips or shortcuts please help. I would like to do this in the next 3 evenings after work. That means I need to do it in about 3 hours total. Going to try search now.
Sawzall/torch do not count as tips.
THANKS

The only way I know is to pull all the 7 & 10 mm screws out all around the perimeter of the bumper. Even doing this should only take about an hour or less to do. You should be able to do a complete R&R in 3 hours.

There's something like 30 bolts total holding it on. Once all those are out, it's stretch and pull it over it's supports and brackets. No real shortcuts here.

Thanks. It just needs to be off by Thursday night. So I guess it will be. I had the back one off in an hour last night, but Ive been down that road before.

You can either remove the cover from the crash assembly or you can remove the entire bumper assembly.

I'm thinking removing the entire assembly might be faster, but when considering both R&R, the cover (only) would probably go on/off faster.

In both cases, you'd have to disconnect where it meets with the wheel wells, lights, etc...

The assembly hangs on with only 4 bolts I think. They are someone difficult to spot inside. But, removing those could lead to extra work if shims drop and you spend significant time with re-alignment. Believe me, aligning the whole bmpr assm can be a BEECH!

It's been awhile, but I think the cover comes off by removing small screws along the top rim as well as underneath. I'm guessing this will cause you less grief!

Try that first.

P.S. I've only removed the whole thing (to convert from early to late style bumper. I can't remember if any of the cover screws are difficult to find/reach if mounted on the car. But I'm thinking you'll be fine.

Edit: If it helps in your search, I do remember a lengthy COMPLETE description of front bumper r/r being posted in C4 General (or tech) about 2yrs ago.

If you can do the miserable rear bumper in an hour then you can probably do the front one in 15 minutes!
I've done both and the front is way easier to do.

Thanks. The 4 bolt method is what I had read in the past. Thought it may be easier. Think I'll try the remove the cover method first and see how it goes.

Sounds good to me. Got nothing done tonight. Must have got a bit dehydrated today and on the way home my left thigh tightened up so hard I had to stop on the side of the interstate and suck down some Gatoraide. Decided best stay off it. Guess I'll try again tomorrow.
