What are your thoughts about reading the blinking light in lieu of a code reader (pro's/cons) and what is the best code reader for a 88 model vette should I want to purchase one. Keep it basic for me please.

For and '88

I you just want to check for trouble codes and nothing more just count the # of times the light blinks....all you need is a paper clip to perform this type of check. The resulting codes are not extremly specific as to what is going on.

If you want to skip the counting you'll need to pick up something that reads OBD1 codes/counts and/or gives specific feedback values/data from each component. There are lots of choices out there....there is a good # (inexpensive to expensive) small hand held units available. Typically the more you spend on one of these hand held units the more options you get....including real time readings and data recording.

Another option that is very popular is to use a computer, a interface cable and a software program that can interpret OBD1 info. There is a great deal of freeware software out there which you can download.

For code reading a paperclip. For detailed real time info you need a scanner, such as the AutoXRay

Or if your local autozone has them, one of these:

How to:
With paper clip in place, turn the ignition key "On" but don't start the engine and leave it there. The Engine light will now begin to flash and cooling fan will run which is normal. It's supposed to run when you do this.
If the fan does not come on, then you have a seperate problem with your fan circuit. Deal with that at a later time. But for now, resume your code reading.

Jump a wire or paper clip between the A and B terminals of the ALDL connector under dash as follows:

What you are doing here is counting the flashes of the Engine light. The first series of flashes is the FIRST digit of the first code. There will be a short pause, then another set of flashes which is the second digit of the code. You put them together and that is your first code. Code digits are seperated by a short pause, while entire codes are seperated by a longer pause in between each one:

Example:

First series flashes three times = 3

shot pause..

Second series flashes six times = 6

Equals Code 36

Each code repeats itself 3 times before it moves onto the next.

You will always get a code 12 at the beginning and at the end. This code is not a trouble code. It only indicates the beginning and end of the test. Any codes in between the two code 12's are your trouble codes and the ones you should write down. If no trouble codes, only code 12 will flash.

Sit in the driver's seat and write down the codes you find on a sheet of paper as you observe the flashes.
