Default Heads

I have some valve smoke when i start her up. she has 91k on the motor so i was toying with getting the heads re done. The local machine shop quoted me 250.00 for the whole ball of wax.

I never did this before so do i just un bolt them and then re bolt them back on and tourqe to spec? or is this a job for a professional?

Hmmmmm...

No, is not just like that

I know how to take the whole engine apart but when it came to heads, I sent them to Elliot Portworks and he did everything.

If you are planning on taking the heads off, let a pro do that kind of surgery. I highly recommend for you to buy the FSM (Field Service Manual) if you are thinking about doing that work.

Note: I started with a radiator replacement. Click below my signature

My local machine shop quoted $275 for a 3 angle valve job, mill, and assembly. So depending on what you're calling "the whole ball of wax" that sounds like it's at least in line.

of course that's if I bring in just the heads and new parts. it goes way up if they have to take the heads off and order parts.

I would bet all you need is new valve seals. These can be replaced with the heads on the car. If the compression is good, then doing this could save you a lot of money.

How many miles on the car? If she is less than 150k and running good, a valve job might be a waste of money.

Change the valve springs while you are at it. THey are less than 50.00.

Maybe its just me, but the cylinder head IS A BOLT OFF then ON. With the exception of the timing no thinking is required.

- head machining needs to include a 3 angle valve job, hot tank (or equivalen cleaning), surfacing, valve machining (standard angles or plus back cuts)

- gaskets: cometic head gasket, intake, valve covers,

- Torque wrench
