Default A/C comes on when A/C button not depressed

Hello, I have a 94 6spd and I noticed that my air conditioner comes on when the 'AC ventilation' button is depressed (expected) but also when the button next to it is depressed, 'upper and lower air flow' (without the words AC on it). I would not expect the AC compressor to receive a signal from this, especially since I use this button in conjunction with the heater (slide switch to the hot side). Is this normal or am I experiencing an electrical issue?

Hi,

I noticed that and find it wierd too.

I have a 92 so it may be possible that yours is different to mine - but according to my handbook the only settings that do not bring the A/C on (above 5c)are either the face position button (vents near the instrument panel) or the floor position button.

The button with both face and floor is called bi-level and brings the A/C on like you say.

Mine has the auto climate but it also has bi-level and does the same - the handbook shows both the climate control and manual heater versions, so it must be right.....

It seems wierd though that you can`t have warm air to your face and feet at the same time without bringing the A/C on, as it uses a few mpg which though not all that big a deal seems a waste especially over here in the UK where you only need cooling down about 2 days a year. I know it helps demist quicker but theres a seperate button for that anyway.

Maybe there wasn`t enough room for another bi-level button that doesn`t bring the A/C on!

I think I wish my car had manual heater control like yours, there don`t seem to be enough heat settings on the climate control. 85f is nice til it reaches the tepmperature, then it starts blowing cold air on you - but 90f just roasts you alive, so you have to turn it back down anyway

L8r,
Dom

Normal operation, the service manual indicates the only vent selections that don't allow the A/C compressor to engage are VENT and HEATER.

I think most modern cars engage the A/C when air is directed at the windshield to remove the moisture from it (by-product of A/C). This is to prevent potential fog or frost on the inside of windshield which would obscure the driver's view.

Thanks for the info. I can put my mind at ease and not wonder why the car felt slower some days when I had ventilation to both my face and feet. My vette came owners manual-less
