Ok, here we go. My 1989 corvette had slop in the steering wheel. I took it apart and changed the steering housing, tightened the 4 bolts at the raer housing, and installed new pivot pins. After putting it back together, I still have some movement. The most pronounced movement is at the middle tilt level. It is tighter at the other tilt levels. Anybody got any ideas what might be the problem? It's driving me crazy.

The girlfriend has had me eating salad for some time now..... I now drive with the steering wheel tilt all the way down on my '89....steering seems tight as a drum in mine there. I'll check my column for looseness at various tilt levels tomorrow to see if it gets loose/tight if I change it to other positions. Guess what is for dinner tonight....yep more salad I'm going to go crazy if I don't get a cheesburger soon.
Is the movement up or down in the column or is loose like sloppy steering U joints?
It just has movement up and down; no side to side or angle movement. I feel like I wasted money changing the housing since it feels no different than before.
Might want to check the 2 bolts (15mm I think) that hold the column up. I have seen these come loose and alow play, also make sure the bracket is stright and aligned. ....G
Up/down only got it...will check tomorrow during the drive time.
So check my steering for slop.....mine has: no movement side to side in any tilt postion. I can move the steering unit up and down...I only feel a slight bump though....the steering "wheel" only deflects/moves (up/down) about an 1/8 of an inch distance in any tilt postition. When I pushed really hard I can move the wheel up and down only an maximum of a 1/4 inch. Hope this helps.
