Default Timing Question Mark Moved

OK Last week my 87 L98 Vett stoped while running tired to start sounded like the timing was off, got car home sure enough dizzy gear was bad. However now while setting up TDC on compression stroke it looks like the timing mark is about a quarter turn off on the balancer at TDC. I know there is a rubber piece that can wear out. Any ideas as to starting car would be great. Thanks

If I remove the valve cover and the intake valve is closed while the piston is at TDC can I assume that my timing chain didnt jump and things are still right inside the motor? If I remark my timing damper I should be able to see if its moved again checking it later.

it is imperative that you find tdc here. go purchase a piston stop at a speed shop and carefully read the directions to find true tdc, then look at your timing mark at the balancer and see if it lines up with the indicator, im more concerned about you wiping a dist. gear. on normal timing or dist. install. you simply crank the mill with #1 plug out with a finger over the hole, when you feel pressure. then look at the timing mark and it should be coming around to the cover mark, when it lines up that should be tdc. in this case where the mark is in question, you must find tdc. and go from there...good luck

Ok its on TDC I used a compression gague and a wire probe the piston is inTDC position I can feel it, the mark on the damper has moved its a1/4 turn behind if I move the mark to line up I can feel the piston moving doward. I understand this can happen when the rubber gasket goes bad from age.

Change it now before it moves backwards and begins to rub a hole in your timing cover, cause a big oil leak, and introduce metal shavings into your motor.

Thanks for the info but I first want to get it running again. I'll change it out after that
