Default BCM Swap

I have the dreaded VATS issue. The car is very close to 200k miles and an expensive fix that is dragged out really isn't desired here.

I have found a BCM on ebay for a 90. My question is, can I swap this into a '91? I have the sticker off of the original with 2 sets of numbers.

I am not sure if they need to match the next bcm and etc.

If anyone can help that would be great. Help this baby make it another 3k to 200k!!!

My parts CD shows different part numbers for 90 & 91. 1990 is
PN 16146688, 91 is PN 16155502.
What the difference is I have no idea. You will end up displaying mileage of the replacement CCM, only a new one can be set to the original miles and it must be done within the first 100 miles. The CCM should also be programmed with the options on the original car such radio, LTPWS, vats code, climate control etc., a Tech 1 is required to set the mileage and options. I know of people who have swapped used CCM's but I believe you will need to know the vats code from the donor car then cut a new key with that resistance value for your ignition switch. Hope that helps, good luck.

And just what is your VATS issue you may not need to replace the CCM.

It is at the mechanics. My friend has the CATS software he uses on his car and we uploaded the info for this vette but it seems whatever shot is in the BCM doesn't allow for the computer to fully read the computer. The next step would maybe be the home made vats delete or just get a new one.

Also toptech or anyone, the issues with adding the accesories.......it needs to be reprogrammed for those? Well the radio doesn't work so no biggie but power windows, blower motor, seat motors etc. Will they just not work if the donor car didn't have those options?

I am figuring best shot would just be the new one and the mechanic wasn't too keen on my friend attempting to fix it with his laptop. (Its the old mans car, he maintains it like you would a Toyota and it's still kicking)

As far as I know the only problems resulting from incompatible options might be a SYS lamp, hopefully everything will still function. As Redeasysport mentioned make sure you don't have another problem, is the key resistor good, the contacts in the column etc. Way better to follow the flow chart in the FSM than guessing on this one.
If you NEED a CCM give this place a try for a new one, he should be able to handle the programming issues, good luck.

Fix VATS vs. disarm VATS is a touchy topic around here, like arguing religion or politics.

Having said that, my view is: disarm the mother!

I've had well over 20 cars since I started driving and none besides my Vette had VATS. I've survived just fine.... I disarmed mine ASAP once it started giving me trouble and have been happily motoring ever since.

Yep if all you need is a bypass it is the cheapest and probably best way to go. Sounds like you need a FSM to figure out what is going on.

Also what about having the correct pill in the key? The new ccm would be running off of a different range. So how do you know what the proper pill range is to make a new key?

There is a key programming procedure for a new CCM that does not require the Tech 1, it is in the FSM.
As far as determining what resistance value a used CCM is looking for I think you need the GM VATS interrogator tool or just try all 15 available values jumped across the connector at the base of the column until you get lucky.
