Default antenna shaft replacement

wifey broke the antenna shaft on her 92. i have a repair kit however there is a rubber/vinyle insert on top of the fender where the shaft retracts into that is not addressed in the instruction sheet. how do i remove it to get to the retaining nut to remove whats left of the shaft? i was able to remove the telescoping part along with the nylon tail. regards-Z

If it is anything like my '94, it is just a press fit "grommet" and you pry it out with your fingers. I just did this recently and learned that I didn't have to remove that rubber grommet to get at the retaining nut.

I also bougt the mast repair kit, and had a hell of a time get the antenna motor to "suck" in the new nylon ribbon. There was no problem getting the the gear to retract the ribbon, but it only ingested about 1/2 the ribbon.

I hope you have better luck. I gave up, cut the nylon off of my old antenna mast, and now have a manually operated antenna .

It either pulls out with some careful wedging, or it may be screwed in.

No, it is definately screwed in. Once you remove the retaining nut, then you have to work out the old broken nylon ribbon using a little persuasive pulling. Also, this method only works if the "broken" mast is in the extended position, ie. most of the ribbon is out of the gear housing and inside the antenna.

When you are ready to install the new mast, get a helper. While you "feed" the new nylon ribbon gently into the motor, have the helper turn on the car's ignition (with radio powered "on"). The trick to getting the whole ribbon into the motor is to have it pulled in immediately when electrical power is applied. It might take several attempts, but it is definitely much easier with 2 people.
