Default Shifter Boot Replacement

I am attempting to replace my shifter boot, on a 92 manual, I have read the FSM and it tells me to remove the small plate on top, then remove the so called (carter pin), but I cannot determine how to remove it, should it just pull up or is something else holding it on?

The little T shape pin thats inside the **** ? I got a needle nose vise grip on mine and wobbled it out. Shoot a little WD into it and try again. I also know when replacing it you don't have pound back it tight, it holds very well by just tapping it in snug. Good luck.

Oh, the cover plate (with the shifting pattern) just pry it out with a small screwdriver.

The little wedge can be tough to get out - I destroyed mine in the process. I didn't bother replacing it when I put it back together - the **** seems plenty tight.
