I have a 2800 stall converter in my '96. I've been having a TC lock up problem lately though. At times it just won't lock up when in OD. Other times like when it comes out of OD it won't lock up after enough speed has increased for it to do so. I can stop and cut the car off, restart it and all is fine. No pattern to it just seems to do it whenever and not all the time. Any suggestions?
A good starting point would be a road test with a scan tool, preferably one that can record a snap shot of the problem when it occurs. You can then view the data recording watching for the PCM inputs required for lock up to occur, engine temp, brake switch, gear selected, vss.
If all required inputs are present does the PCM command converter lock up? (PCM output)
The above procedure should help identify the source of the problem, if the PCM is calling for lockup all inputs are present, you can then troubleshoot the electrical circuit from PCM to lock up solenoid, if the PCM can operate the solenoid you have isolated the problem to the converter or the hydraulic circuit between the solenoid and TCC, good luck.
