On my 90 I'm getting a code 32 (EGR) as soon as I pull on to the interstate and run at a steady speed for 2-3 minutes. The idle speed also seems to be wandering a bit a stoplights.
I had it in the shop at the Chevy dealer for a new fuel pump a couple of weeks ago and told them about the code 32's. They said they checked it but couldn't find anything (not sure how hard they looked...)
I'm guessing (hoping?) that it's a vacuum leak. I don't have a vacuum guage at home to do the tests in the shop manual. Any thoughts or ideas?
Thanks,
Mark
(I think I just sent you an email from vettenet...)
By any chance do you have an aftermarket exhaust? If you have had the
mufflers or pre-cats removed, you'll get a code 32. I did on my car when I
got the new front y-pipe with no pre-cats. Luckily, I program my own chips,
so I removed the code 32 check. Never get the code anymore.
Email me if you're interested in changing your chip for this.....
Could also be a sticking EGR valve. Mine was doing the same thing. I took it to a shop here and they "Motor Vac'd" the engine, which is basically running a high detergent/flammable detergent through the fuel rails. They run the machine for a while with the engine off, then with the engine on. Takes about an hour. Cleans everything fuel related: fuel rails, injectors, egr, pistons, valves, etc. Car ran 100% better after and has never pulled a code 32 again.
I am pulling a code now (can't remember the number), but it's "Quad driver fault" (or something like that). Have to look into that.
Does your car have pre-cats? It is an L-98? I have a gutted cat on my '85 and I get no codes. I did have a code 32 and replaced the EGR valve and it's temp sensor. Also replaced all the vac lines (needed to be done anyway). Everything is ok now, no codes. Be sure if you do replace the EGR and sensor to use the GM replacement. I have had trouble before using non-GM sensors.
Good Luck!
