I am working on a friends grand prix gtp, with obd 2. He recently went for emissions test, and they could not test due to no history available. I had to disconnect the battery earlier, however the owner has put on roughly 40 miles since battery was reconnected. I know this is not a vette, but does anybody know if this is normal?

It takes my OBD2 cars 5-10 miles to get all or all but one readiness monitor back after a reset. And you can have 2 or 3 unready monitors depending on year of car and which state you're in, so not being ready after 40 miles sounds like there's a problem.
If you buy a cheap OBD2 scanner or take it to an auto parts place for a scan you can verify for yourself whether it is ready before going to the smog station.
