Default Removing bread box on an 86

I bought a flat panel kit to replace the bread box and the instructions are not clear on how to remove the box. Does anyone know an easy way to remove it without taking the whole dash apart?
Thanks,
JD

You may want to do a search on this topic....people have cut corners by breaking hardware off to get the job done quicker....but you have to pretty remove the whole top of the dash.

If I recall correctly from reading posts on this subject, I think you have to remove the dash pad, which isn't all that hard. But... I know for sure I have heard posters say that you almost certainly cannot replace ALL the bolts when installing the flat panel. I would do a search on it for sure. Good luck.

On my '88 I just reached in through the fuse panel and cut the supports with a hack saw blade. That didn't take long at all.

I reused one of the cut angle support brackets and riveted it on the side of the delete panel to add strength and help secure it.

It is a PITA but I never pulled the top pad, going in from under. Some ducts and wiring needs to move, but with the lower panel off, maybe some mirrors and light, you'll get it removed.

FWIW, using the cheaply made, flat kit for a subsequent simu-wood covering was a waste of money. I'd have done equally well, for near nothing, with a thin piece of plywood or about any other material.

I used a hack saw blade to cut out the bread box. I hated the look of the stock dash. I got this dash kit from Mid America. It's been on for about 5 years.

I have the same thing. From MAM. I like it. Especially the flat panel.

Just did mine this past weekend (85). I took the dash off which wasn't that big of a deal. removed 3 of the 4 screws holding the bread box in minutes. That last one took about 15.

Nice job, looks fresh, I don't care for the wood look in a car, either but to each his own!

Dash is easy. Two bottom screws are hard. Here's mine again:

Breadbox off with VATS tucked away:

Nice look, and like your steering wheel, looks sharp.

I just took the dash panel off so I could get to the two top screws on the breadbox. As for the lower ones I pried the breadbox back far enough to get a 7mm wrench in behind so I could get the last two screws out, it helps if you use a 7mm ratchet wrench. The one towards the center counsel is a bitch. The top dash pad has to have the speedometer bezel and the center bezel taken out to get at some of the screws for the dash panel. Once the screws are out of the dash panel pull the tilt down so it will clear, you have to pull it towards the rear of the car. This is for a 1986 Corvette.

What kit is this, out of curiosity? THe only ones I've seen are the flat types to replace the box. I actually like the way the box looks, so something like this would be perfect.

Default I didn't buy a kit I just used clear Plexiglas

Anything's better than that horrible pad. This is just Plexiglas i cut and painted from the back. Works for me (me being my wallet). As far as taking it apart the previous owner had most of it apart when i bought it

I do not believe that they are available new anymore. I bought one from a member last year through the FS section of the forum.
