Default ???Gas Gauge???

Hey there. Im a new Corvette owner as today. I got a 94 vette that the gas meter doesnt read anymore that a quater. It can easly go up as down to reserve. I also got light for about two minuters that said "check gauges". Some one said it was pretty common. What is it? How can i fix it? and how hard is it? Thanx

Welcome and congrats on your new-to-you Corvette...

We've had our 94 for awhile and you'll love it, so best of luck...

regarding the gas-gauge, it is a common problem on all the C4's --

The problem is the gauge has a corrosion problem which can sometimes be cleaned (caused by increased sulfer in gas).

The gauge is relatively easy to remove (through the fill door) but will require a new gasket to re-install.

Do a search. Also there should be a write-up in the 'tech' section.

If that doesnt work you will have to order a new sending unit which is easy to install as well.

I just got a new fuel sending unit from corvette central for 199.00.

Forum vendor Corvette Recycling has them. Brand new GM NOS for $199. I purchased from them before, great prices and great service.

My gauge on my 87 hasn't worked in years. You get used to it. Just keep track of your mileage and spend the cash on other goodies!

I've heard of folks having been successful in flipping the rheostat? around and using the other side of it and having it work accurately again.

You dont need to drop the fuel tank or anything right? Its just some screws and some disconecting hose and sensor wire and then just reconecting everything back correct?

Correct just take the 4 torx screws out of the fuel door than the rubber around the fuel neck and then you'll see 8 or 10-10 mm bolts take them out undo the 3 hoses and lift it out carefully and unplug the wires for the sending unit and fuel tank, take off the fuel pump and put it on your new unit and than put it all back together you can do this in no time really it is a simple job.
