Default SMOG Flow Chart

Hey! So I just failed smog (again). I'm in California in an enhanced area. I failed only on hydrocarbons, at both speeds. The CO2 was right between 14 and 15%, so the CAT is functioning. The NO, CO, and O2 were all in line. The timing was also supposedly off spec. I set it a few months ago, but it was off, so I re-timed the car and put in a fuel filter. I also threw in a new O2, because I had my suspicions. I also run 91 in the car so I can short shift it. I'm gonna run some of that out of the car now and fill it up the rest of the way with 87 to maybe get a better burn. The cap and rotor are 500 miles old, the car has an Accel super coil, and MSD plug wires, and relatively new plugs.

Anybody have any ideas why I'm not getting a good burn? Maybe somebody has a flowchart for that running condition? I don't have my smog license, and I'm pretty much just an R&I guy, so that's why I'm so clueless here. I'm really hoping to hear pointers from somebody with their license in an enhanced area? I hate my biannual with a passion and I want to get to a point where its no big deal.

Change your oil before testing.

Just looked at your profile...you have a 1985. You list your injectors at 28 pound? Is that correct? Stock injectors for the 85 should only be 24#. This may be part of your problem....getting too much fuel. The stock size injectors should be able to support MUCH more HP than you are currently putting out.

Just a suggestion.....run the cars fuel down to about 7 gallons. Then add 1 gallon of denatured alcohol to the fuel. Run the car to be sure that you are now running the mix thru the fuel system. You can buy a gallon at Orchard Supply (in their paint section). This is also used in Marine stoves and is know for buring very clean. It will not hurt the injectors, motor or cat. This should push your car into range to pass.

Then in the future start running down the other items that might have an impact on your numbers. What is the fuel pressure at? Are the plugs, rotor, cap new? Plugs gapped correctly? TPS set at .54 with engine off..key in the on position?

sent you a email.
