ok so on my 84 im doin aftermarket gauges and theyre electrical. im wondering how i hook up the speedo? ive been lookin at my wiring diagrams and there is a signal wire off of the trans. do i jsut tap into that? cause the company that i got the gauges from says i need this conversion thing.
If you do not have a cable then you most likely have a speed sensor (VSS). As long as it meets the following criteria you do not need a sending unit:
Any speed sender or electronic module that meets the following two conditions can be used with our speedo:
1. Pulse range generated proportional to the vehicle speed
2. Output within the voltage ranges listed below:
a. 3.0V peak (Square Wave) or greater, typical for 3 wire hall effect sender outputs
b. 3.0V peak to peak (Sine Wave) or greater, typical for 2 wire vehicle speed sensor outputs
Early C4 have the "b" above. It is gear-driven like a cable speedo, but is fully electronic. The signal is 'calibrated' by changing the driven gear on the VSS. I'm not sure when C4 goes to 'tone ring' type VSS, but probably around 90 or so. The early Corvette DigiDash speedo, VSS, and speed signals is a real odd-ball. Unlike anything else GM did. (Except Allante, ..) Kind of a pain.
You may or may not need a 'buffer'. If you do, look at Dakota Digital. They have all that stuff. You'll be OK, just keep studying.
Working with my speedo as a future project. It's confusing to say the least for me.
