Default Engine Overhaul Questions....

I got a couple of questions that you guys can help me out with. The platform is a 1996 A4 LT1.

Timing cover... Im going with a electric water pump what timing cover do I use a 1995 0r can I use a 92-94 also?

Pull the engine or cam swap with it in there? Im disconnecting the tranny to put the converter in should I just pull the engine and avoid the leaning process?

What gasket work well with the 1 3/4 EM Long Tubes?

You can use your 96 timing cover with the e. water pump.

I use Percys Al header gaskets with my EM headers.

Isn't there a hole in the cover that has to be plugged?

Yes, if the water pump drive is removed. The hole has to be plugged. This is true no matter what year cover is used.

Yes

The waterpump drive shaft hole...

And the crankshaft sensor hole if he runs a double roller timing set like he was planning.

If you're going to change converters and do a cam, might as well pull the engine since most of the unbolting will be done to get the convertor out.

I'm going to change heads and cam on my son's 96 in a couple of months and I'm pulling the engine to do it. That way I can install a new timing chain set, degree in the cam and have better access to the head bolts. While it's out, I can clean the engine compartment too.

You are right I am going to a double roller timing chain. They say I have to get rid of the OBDII crank sensor. Qoute from 400rwhp thread.

"The Cloys 9-3145 chain is a good one - BUT...

Your going to have to lose the OBDII crank sensor and have the code programmed out when the tune is done. "

And the OBDI 1995 timing cover doesnt have it I was wondering if the 92-95 all use the same timing cover.

No, the 95 is different and the only one that will work with your gen II opti.

The link you posted doesn't seem to show me a pic,
I can not see any reason that your 96 cover wouldn't work,
You would just need to plug the Crank position Sensor hole in addition to the waterpump drive hole.... Also you will need to scrap the CPS sensor and have your PCM reprogrammed if you are planning on running an older style double roller chain!

I found this pic of a 1996 LT4 Timing cover being compared to his new one.

Old left vs New right

Where can I get the block for the pump drive hole like has on the right?

Jim had a local machine shop install that plug. He also had one done for me. On my second timing cover I just used a small freeze plug and JB Weld.

If this was off a 1996 where is the CPS at?
Does mine look the same as these? (minus the modded one on the right)
Can I use my timing cover and mod it like the right?

The crank position sensor is lying next to the one on the right. I'm pretty sure you can just leave it installed in the timing cover to plug the hole.

The only thing you need to get rid of is the reluctor wheel that mounts in front of the crankshaft gear. You can leave the CPS in place in the timing cover even though functionally it won't be doing anything other than plugging the hole.

The picture is one I took of my timing covers.
- Yes they are '96 covers.
- Yes yours will look the same.
- Yes you can mod yours.
- No, you do NOT need to ditch the crankshaft position sensor (CPS), you can leave it bolted to the cover eliminating the need to plug the hole.
- You must get rid of the crankshaft reluctor ring.

Nice I hope this will do it. And the sensor doesnt protrude into te inside of the timing cover to "sense" the reluctor wheel? Hense messing with the double roller.

It doesn't protrude into the cover.
