A strange problem came up on my 86. The fuel mileage and range will go to zero randomly. When they go to zero the idle speeds up to around 1k. They will come back to normal and the idle is okay. When they zero out when I am driving the car seems to run the okay with no problems. I have actually been sitting at a light when they would zero out and the car would want to move as the idle sped up.
Any ideas on this one? Oh, all other readouts are fine, as is everything else with the car running.
It sounds to me like a ground problem. Every time I do any work on the Vette I look for the closest ground point and clean it even if it is not causing any problems.
Have you done any work to the car since prior to the problem showing up....welding, jumpstarting....etc.? Does it only do the "0" when the fuel switch is set to "instant" or does it do in when switched to "average" also? Bad connections to, from or within the cluster might be a possibility as mentioned in the above post. It is also possible that there is a problem with the fuel level sender circuit. The fuel level gauge in the the early C4's can take up to 10 seconds to respond to a fuel level change....where as the MPG or Range are more quick to respond. Your problem sounds more like a cluster electronics issue to me though.

No work had been done on the car. I did think the cluster was going bad. I don't understand how that would affect idle speed.
Oh, it doesn't matter if the fuel setting is instant or average.

I was going through some of my vette literature last night and came across a section that talked about the fuel range and mileage calculations being done by the ECM (not the cluster as I mentioned in the above post...my bad) and then the info is sent to the cluster for the LCD displays. So with this information in mind your ECM or the connections between the ECM and the cluster may have a problem. A faulty ECM would explain your intermittant idle problem. Reseat the connector for and between the two components and /or remove the ECM and tap on the case with the back of a screwdriver handle while the car is running to see if the idle changes with the taps.
