Been a while since I've been to the forums, glad to see it's still thriving.
Anyway, I have a stock 93 that I bought back in '01 when I was 19. It's been sitting the last 4 years down at my parents house because of this problem and I haven't had the time to fix it.
The problem is, I'll take it out and after 5 mins or so the car will want to die on me, leaving me stranded where ever I may be, unless I keep the rpm's above 3k. And it won't always do it. I don't know all that much about what it could be. I've changed the fuel filter and lines, which were plugged up. I've drained the fuel and that's not the problem either. I've also brought it to a corvette professional, I told him the problem and even told him to take it for test drives AND IT DIDN'T ACT UP! Brought it back to the house, few days later I take it out 45 mins into driving it hesitates to run but only for a second. That's when I gave up on it. Since then, my Dad brought it to one of his friends to get some fresh paint on it (Black with a Dark gray GS stripe) and had no problems with it being a 2 hour drive one way. And also he brought it to my wedding reception as a surprise (Last September)and also had no problems.
So...Does my car hate me? Things are finally settled down in my life and I love driving that car and want to take it out his year, so I need to get it fixed. My next guess is the fuel pump. Any advice or opinions on where to look next would be greatly appreciated.
Have you checked for codes I would assume so since you had taken it to a dealer. I understand that there is an inner bladder in the tank has anyone mentioned that? It could be a opti problem but that should show when you check the codes. Finally How 'bout the coil and or plug wires. Have you check the O2 censors? Lots of areas to check, good luck.
I've had two C4 fuel pumps failures over the last several years. In both cases the pumps were unable to maintain sufficient pressure in the fuel rails to run the engine...just enough to start it or stumble through start up. I would check the fuel rail pressure before changing out the fuel pump.
Based upon your description of the problem's history, I'd say that initially you had a bad/old gas problem that was resolved by changing the fuel filter and fuel lines. If you're still having a stumble problem, try using either Redline Fuel System Cleaner or Chevron's Techron Fuel System Cleaner in a tank of fresh gas and go for a drive.
This should cure your problem. Also, don't store gas w/o a stabilizer for more than six months. The gums and varnishes tend to separate out over time.
long ago my uncle had a car that got trash in the tank; it would randomly stick to the tank strainer and the thing would die. After it sit for a while it would crank right up and run great for a while. If you have had a trash problem there's likely more.
One thing the pump is easy to get out of a vette. The hardest part will be getting the gas boot seal out. Then just take out the ring of bolts and pull the pump and all out. Before that do a pressure test and see if you get a fast leakdown.
You also need to take a look at injectors, about all you can do is an ohm's check. If they aren't all around 14-16ohms time to look for some new injectors.
I had alot of trouble with my 90 2 years ago. It would stumble under almost any attempt at acceleration, but it idled perfect. Similar to what you described, sometimes the problem would go away completely- then bam! it was back again and I was limping my Vette home at 20 miles an hour getting passed by Civics and Neons again.
After replacing everything from the fuel filter, o2 sensor, TPS, Cat, changing to Flowmaster exhaust (OK I wanted to do that so this was a good excuse) it turned out to be I had 2 fuel injectors shorting out internally. That explained the sporadic disappearing of the trouble. A new set of Accels later and my car has run perfectly ever since. I hope this helps.
