Im looking a a cast crank to keep cost down. Its not going to be a wild engine (around 380-400 horse) I am torn between internal and external balance. I want to keep my stock dual mass flywheel but I wont want to have to put mallory metal in the thing to get it to balance- (like the scat crank requires) becuase the machine shop said it would be upwards of 400 dollars do do the balance.
Anyone running a single mass nuetral balance flywheel? I wanna know whats so bad about them and what people mean by they rattle and make noise.
I've got a SM aluminum flywheel in my stroker, and it sounds like the transmission is "dieseling" when in neutral. Taking off in first gear requires more of a touch since the rotating assembly doesn't have the mass to help it engage and get going smoothly. High performance aftermarket clutches can also make it tougher, otherwise I really can't tell that it's on there, and it does rev up quicker now The noise doesn't bother me since the car is loud as hell anyways.
If it were my daily driver, and I had to deal with alot of stop and go traffic, personally I'd keep the DM.
Edit: I see you didn't mention it being an aluminum FW but rather just SM. I think the aluminum ones are louder and are the harder ones to use. I think LUK makes an affordable SM steel flywheel where you wouldn't have as much of these issues.
