The tire shop cross threaded 2 lug nuts on the rt. rear of my 91. While trying to remove them, I broke both studs off. Can these two be removed from the hub and replaced, or do I need an entirely new unit.
you can knock them out with a cold chisel and a large hammer. Be sure that you have clearance behind the one you are knocking out. Turn the axle if you need to. Then you can replace it. One of the best ways is to stack a bunch of washers in front of the nut (between the nut and the hub) and use an impact to tighten the stud. This will pull it through the hub and seat it. You need the washers to take up the space between the hub and the nut.
I broke two last year. Replacements were less than $5 and it didn't take more than 10 mins to remove the old ones and put in the new ones.
My 92 has had the wheels off and re-installed by a tire store twice. Both times when I later pulled the wheels myself I had at least one stripped lug. I bought a few extra and now carry two spares in the console.
As stated just pop them out.An easy way when replacing with new studs if doing this by hand, line up the splines of the new stud and the bore in the axle, but some grease on the surface of the washer, nut and use a long wrench to pull the stud into the bore on the flange.
I have heard that tightening the lug on the stud to draw it in requires more force than the tensile strength of the stud. I like to put a socket over the hole in the hub, put the stud in from the back, and draw it in with a big C-clamp. Works for me. Just my $.02.
Hammering on the studs is a good way to pit the bearing races. I recommend yo remove the hub and have a shop press new studs in. As stated above, they are cheap, replace them all while you're at it. The studs are grade 10.9, so they can handle being "pulled" into place with a lug nut, but it will likely distort the threads on the nut. Ask me how I know.
