Yukon gears ??
I'm looking at putting 3.73 gears in my '92 6-speed with a Dana 44. Anyone have any experience with Yukon Gears? Any other recommendations for gears? Thanks
My recommendation on the brand of gears would be Dana. I've yet to hear of anyone with a C4 having problems with a Dana gearset. My Dana 4.10's are quieter than the stock 3.45's.
I have Yukon 3.73's in mine. I don't drag much at all, but a decent amount of roadrace track time and they're holding up just fine. No noise after about 25K miles on them. Just make sure whomever installs them knows how to set them up right.
I just bought a new set off fellow CF member makn u shiver and this was his quote to me
"I put them together for my friend who has a 95 zr1 he sent to lingenfelter for 415 package in 2005 and a 90zr1 that has a few bolt ons .they are both driven hard and the gears don't make any noise or ever had a problems .the 95zr1 is just brutal ,it runs low 10 sec on m/t et drag radials"
I am using Precision gears in mine; they are good quality as well and I think Yukon is right up there too from what I hear; but I agree w/the former post; make sure the set up is correct (backlash, etc.)
Dana would be my preference but all of that aside the one thing you "should" do:
When you buy the install package you'll see it sold two ways.
1. 4-bearings, 1-seal, 1-crush sleeve and assorted shims.
2. 6-bearings, 3-seals, 1-crush sleeve and assorted shims.
Buy the 6-bearing set, do the short axle bearings and seals while doing the build. I would also suggest the buy of a second crush sleeve and pinion nut. It's certainly possible for any "fresh" build to get "complicated"! It cost's very little to "be prepared"!!
I have used this Corvette Dana 44 rebuild kit supplier several times with good results: http://ratech.stores.yahoo.net/coax84d44.html
Their Deluxe Installation Kit has everything you need including side shaft bearings and seals.
I talked with some people at PRI about Yukon a few years ago when they came on the 4WD scene. From what I gathered -Yukon was a name only, they are a re-boxer of parts... in other words Yukon dosen't manufacture anything. Their gear sets are mostly sold thru Randys Ring and Pinion.
That said I was using Prescision Gear in everything I set up at the time and I was more than happy with the quality and the price was competitive. Over time I started having people bring Yukon gear sets into the shop wanting me to set them up. I did a few Yukon gears and was impressed with the quality of them. Since then I've bought a bunch of those gear sets from Randy's over the years (using them in 4WD Mud Racers). I've never gotten anything bad from them.
I have a Yukon 4.11 for my personal 92 6spd. It's a nice gear set, it is also a specific D44HD gear set and that means no stupid spacer welded on the pinion (like other lesser gear sets).
My recomendation would be either Yukon or Prescision Gear.

Got a recommendation for D44 posi clutches and internal parts other than Tom's Diffs?

I generally keep a set of Dana brand clutches, a 6 bearing assembly kit, a Dana 3.73, and a Dana Trac-loc around at all times. I'm out of the clutch pack presently. I believe I've PM'd you my email address with answers to your last speedo questions you PM'd me.
