I will have my engine out (due to some knocking down under) and I figure that now is as good a time as any. I need a stall anyway and have just been putting it off. I know that Vigilante's are good but I believe the cost is fairly high. Are there others that have been holding up. This is your typical LT1 hot cam engine with all the goodies. What stall are you using?
Re: I need help picking a stall conv. (ANTI VENOM)
I'd stay away from tci and b&m. I've had bad luck with both brands in my other car. I had a BTE last season and I just ordered a cone. I tend to believe that when it comes to converters you get what you pay for.
Re: I need help picking a stall conv. (ANTI VENOM)
Antivenom,
Which converter with your set-up becomes more about your application.
If you just want a better than stock converter that gets you up and going, then a 12" 2400-2600 SLP torque converter will be fine. Should knock off 2-3 tenths off your et's. These converters only run around $ 300 or so.
If you're more serious about racing and really want to do a good job optimizing your power at the track then invest in a good Precision Industries Vigalante stall in the neighborhood of 2800-3200 for your modified LT-1.... this will really give you a kick in the butt and knock off at least 3 tenths and more than likely 4 tenths and possibly even a whopping 5 tenths of your et's.... however this highly efficient 9.5" torque converters do not come cheap, typically somewhere around $ 700
As Mackey is doing, if you're a die hard racer and willing to sacrifice some driveability for performance.... get a 3600-4400 rpm Vigalante converter....I don't know if they charge you extra or not for the super high stall converters.... give em a call... or John should know.
Well, I am sort of on the fence with the application. My girlfriend generally drives the car as a "daily driver". The car sees 50 miles of freeway one way and also some in town driving. The SLP is priced right, but it might not be enough stall for 3.33 gears. The Vigilante on the other hand might be too much for street tires and alot of in town driving. I have another vette that is more of a toy, so I want the 92 to be reliable and streetable. Also want to know if aftermarket coolers are necessary with these converters?
Re: I need help picking a stall conv. (ANTI VENOM)
antivenom. I have one of the high dollar stall conv's 3000 vig. The other guys are right, you do get what you pay for. I have about 4000 miles on mine, long road trips and driving in traffic. No problems ever!!
I'm getting my PI converter from here : http://www.ls1speed.com
Ask for Larry, he told me last week he could get me one in a couple days.
Hey Nick,
I thought you were going to wait till spring and try for a group purchase. Or do you feel that this is as good of a deal as you are going to get. By the way what stall are you going with? Thanks for the info.
Re: I need help picking a stall conv. (Red 86 4+3)
Who makes the raptor 2600 and also the pro torque 2800? What do they cost? Are they quality units? I need to make a decision soon but I have little time to do the research. Thanks to all that help...!
Re: I need help picking a stall conv. (ANTI VENOM)
Go with PI vig. or at least jump to 3000 stall speed. With a trans cooler you will not even know the stall is there in daily driving, until you goose the gas pedal.

Those two being said, if you put a 2800-3000 RPM stall in it, your girlfriend will not be happy. She may get in a serious wreck just trying to pull out onto a highway due to misjudging throttle application, since the car will fell kind of slushy off idle.
I agree with the others about if you want a racing car, go with a higher stall, but not at all for a steet car you will let others drive.
Also, I have a 3.55 gear in my 79, and a 2800-3000 stall converter feels like crap for normal around town driving, so I ended up back to a 2000 RPM stall and have never been happier, so the 3.33 gear thing should be of no consideration here.
