Default Open / Closed Loop

Hey Folks...

Can anyone tell me what makes the EMS go to closed loop mode? I have a 1988 C4 and one of my mates ran a diagnostics program on he's lap top and the car would not go into closed loop? The engine temp was 85 to 88 degress celsius and had been running for a good 10 minutes? I haver also noticed of late that the car seems to be running rich and idling rough

Sounds like you have two of the three requirements to enter closed loop, running time and engine temperature, the third is a functioning O2 sensor. Check for voltage switching between .2 and .8 volts, if it is not verify the circuit is good from the sensor to the ECM or replace the sensor. Some mechanical and fuel system problems can also prevent O2 switching.
